Preface
Pediatric emergency medicine is becoming increasingly recognized as a subspecialty of both pediatrics and emergency medicine. There is little pictorial material on this subject which can be readily reviewed. This book aims to fill that gap.
This self-assessment book is designed to test the knowledge and skills of medical trainees and qualified practitioners managing children in the acute situation, whether they be working in general emergency medicine or primary care, or in the pediatric specialties of medicine, surgery, or orthopedics.
The book is designed to highlight the acute presentation and management of common and the not so common conditions in children. It covers the whole spectrum of pediatrics including medicine, surgery, orthopedics, ENT, ophthalmology, and dermatology. It emphasizes the differences between children and adults - ‘children are not little adults.' There are differences in the significance of conditions in adults and children and in their assessment, investigation, and management.
This book is in the form of questions based on clinical cases each illustrated by photographs, X-rays, or investigations. The answers are given with discussion on various aspects of the case, for example, on differential diagnosis, complications, or management.
