Preface
Two motivations prompted the writing of this book: first, to acclaim the simple, technological elegance of the widely used polyphase induction motor and its frequently unrecognized importance to modern industry and the economic well-being of society; and second, to collect into one volume a significant core of knowledge about polyphase induction motors. This information will be especially useful to young engineers and other technicians whose careers have started within the past two decades, a time when the dissemination of such knowledge has not been emphasized.
Present-day society is very dependent on (but frequently oblivious to) the polyphase induction motor. The technical community is aware that these ubiquitous machines are the "workhorses" of society but appears to take them for granted. I have been concerned, for some time, about the adequate propagation of the art and science of induction-motor technology. For the past 25 years, various engineering colleges have, for the most part, taught electrical machine courses with insufficient time being allocated to ensure reasonable comprehension of the subject matter. This is understandable, considering the huge proliferation of solid-state and other subject matter that has occurred during this period and the need of colleges to include relevant subject matter in an already crowded curriculum. However, decreased attention given to the rotating- machine, and in particular the induction motor, has had its effect.
