Imaging of the foot and ankle presents considerable challenges. The complex and diminutive anatomy coupled with the diverse pathology affecting the anatomic region can be daunting. Technical advances in MR imaging have significantly improved the ability to image the foot and ankle and higher strength gradients, now standard on current imaging units, enable detailed depiction of the anatomy and pathology in this region. When combined with the high inherent contrast discrimination, images of superior diagnostic quality unsurpassed by any other modality are produced. With improvement in the technology and increased experience, our understanding of the MR imaging appearance of many pathologic conditions has advanced over the past 10 years.

Practical MRI of the Foot and Ankle provides an up-to-date guide to MR imaging of the foot and ankle. The reader is initially presented with background information regarding MR imaging techniques appropriate for this anatomic region, followed by a brief discussion of the normal anatomy of the foot and ankle in Chapters 1 and 2. Subsequent chapters encompass a spectrum of topics including pediatric pathology and normal variants, tendon and ligament injuries, neoplastic and traumatic osseous conditions, arthropathies, inflammatory pathology, the diabetic foot, unique conditions of the foot and ankle, and the value of magnetic resonance imaging from the orthopedist's perspective.
