Preface

This book was born out of the frustration of one of the authors at the lack of suitable revision material for preparation for the viva voce section of the MRCS/AFRCS examination. The book itself does not pretend to be a textbook of any type, nor does it try to cover every possible topic; it is purely a revision aid, which demonstrates the types of subjects and questions that are commonly asked at MRCS/AFRCS vivas. It is envisaged that the book will help prospective candidates prepare for the examination and at the same time provide an additional source of information on some topics.

The two authors both qualified from Sheffield University and entered higher surgical training after a wide range of basic training. Jeff Garner is a Specialist Registrar in General Surgery in the Defence Medical Services. He has a wide experience of viva voce examinations, and holds the diploma of Membership from the two Scottish Colleges. Peter Goodfellow is a Specialist Registrar in General Surgery on the North Trent rotation based in Sheffield. He holds the diploma of FRCS. He has taught a local viva revision course twice yearly for FRCS/MRCS/AFRCS for over 5 years, which has a pass rate of over 90 per cent. Both authors maintain an interest in medical education and teach extensively, both undergraduates and junior surgeons preparing for the MRCS/AFRCS examinations.
