Preface
Set amidst the splendor of Seville and the magnificence of Spain, and elevated by the regal presence of Her Majesty, Queen Sophia of Spain, we celebrated The 6th International Congress on Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Diseases during May 8–12, 2003. Her Majesty served as Honorary President of the congress, and chaired the opening session.
This event proved to be most successful. With approximately 1200 scientific participants in attendance, Invited Speaker sessions, Oral presentation sessions, and Poster sessions, the four-and-a-half day meeting provided much scientific stimulation and opportunities for discussion, exchange of ideas, and development of new collaborations.
This book includes chapters contributed by selected invited speakers at the congress.
The generosity of corporate sponsors enabled us to enjoy a meaningful and comprehensive congress. Our appreciation goes to Amersham Health; Ceretec; Datscan; Elan; GlaxoSmithKline; Hunter Fleming; The Institute for the Study of Aging (ISOA); Janssen-Cilag; Merck; and Merz.
In particular, we, the organizers, would like to extend our deepest appreciation to Her Majesty, Queen Sophia. The success of this congress and its attendance (which far surpassed our expectations) is due to the Queen's interest and active participation in this meeting. We were honored by the extent of Her Majesty's knowledge, and humbled by her encouragement. We would also like to acknowledge the participation of Spain's government officials, Her Excellency Ana Pastor, Minister of Health, Government of Spain; His Excellency Manuel Chaves, President of the Autonomous Government of Andalusia; and His Excellency Alfredo Sanchez Monteseirin, Mayor of the city of Seville, in the opening ceremonies.
On behalf of the scientists and researchers in the AD/PD field, we dedicate these proceedings to Her Majesty, Queen Sophia of Spain.
