Preface
This book has its origins in the classic monograph written by Professor J. Guy Scadding and published in 1967 to worldwide acclaim. One of us (DNM) was privileged to collaborate with him in the preparation of a second edition, published in 1985.
Sadly, Professor Scadding died in 1999. In order to accommodate an update of the earlier editions and to include the expansion of our knowledge over the intervening years, we felt it appropriate to present ‘Sarcoidosis' as a new book written on a multi-author basis with colleagues distinguished by their special interest and clinical practice within the multifactorial aspects of sarcoidosis.
We wish to express our thanks to Professor John Gibson, Dr Kenneth Citron and to our many other clinical and clinical research colleagues for their wisdom and advice. Accordingly, we hope that the text may go some little way toward a commemoration of Guy's outstanding contributions not only to sarcoidosis, but to medicine overall.
Finally, we owe a particular debt of gratitude to Philip Shaw, Sarah Penny, Mischa Barrett, Joanna Koster and Caroline Makepeace of Hodder Education for their advice and forbearance throughout the preparation of the manuscript, and to our secretaries, Donna Basire, Terri Cartwright and Sheila Campbell-Smith, whose commitment and dedication were indispensable.
