Preface
Water Quality Criteria for Freshwater Fish, edited by J.S. Alabaster and R. Lloyd, was first published in 1980 (Butterworths: London) on the basis of criteria documents earlier published by EIFAC. These included consideration of contamination by finely divided solids (EIFAC/T1), extreme pH values (EIFAC/T4), water temperature (EIFAC/T6 and T8), ammonia (EIFAC/T11), monohydric phenols (EIFAC/T15), dissolved oxygen (EIFAC/T19), chloride (EIFAC/T20), zinc (EIFAC/T21), copper (EIFAC/T27), zinc and copper (EIFAC/T29) and cadmium (EIFAC/T30). Water Quality Criteria appeared as a second edition in 1982. Since that time several other Criteria assessments have been published either by EIFAC or independently in the professional literature. These include chromium (EIFAC/T43), nickel (EIFAC/T45), nitrite (EIFAC/T46) and aluminium, as well as a report on the combined effects of mixtures of toxicants (EIFAC/T37); some were issued as EIFAC reviews but others were published in the journal Chemistry and Ecology. It seemed appropriate to publish these criteria documents, with revision as appropriate to take account of new scientific findings, in a single volume as a sequel to the earlier Criteria of Alabaster and Lloyd. The reader should note that the present volume in no way replaces that volume, aiming only to complete the later series of EIFAC commissioned criteria documents. In the case of recent reviews (nitrite, aluminium, mixtures), additional material and references have been incorporated in the text.
In the case of earlier EIFAC criteria documents for chromium and nickel, extensive revision has been undertaken and incorporated.
A glossary of relevant terms and a list of fish species referred to in the text has also been included.
I would also like to acknowledge permission from the Food and Agriculture Organisation (Rome) and the European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission (EIFAC) for the use of the chromium and nickel material revised in Chapters 1 and 2, and to Gordon and Breach for the texts of Chapters 3, 4 and 5 previously published in the journal Chemistry and Ecology. My thanks are also due to Dr. J.S. Alabaster, Dr. D. Calamari, Mr. R. Lloyd, Dr. J.P. Reader and Dr. J.F. Solbe for their contributions, help and encouragement.
