Please read this bit!
This book is designed to meet two conflicting goals:
• to be readable and interesting enough to be read by anyone interested in health and healthcare
• to be rigorous and evidence based sufficient to be taken seriously by my academic peers.
There’s actually no reason why a rigorous and well-argued book has to be boring and impenetrable. The problem is how to present the supporting evidence in such a way that it doesn’t get in the way of the argument being presented. The solution that I have adopted is to publish a website with the book that provides links to as much evidence as possible in support of the main text. The website is found at http://www.goodhealthcare.org.uk.
If you just want to read the book, then ignore the references and further information and simply read it as a narrative. Alternatively, if you want to review the evidence then you will need an Internet browser.
