1. Scope
1.1
This Standard gives tables of standard tolerances for linear dimensions in both inch and metric units, covering a range of sizes up to 200 inches or 5,000 millimetres. Tolerances are provided in a series of grades which cover the full range of precision, from ultra precise products such as gauging elements to coarse tolerances suitable for rough work, and for many types of manufacturing or production processes, including casting and forming as well as cutting operations. Appendix A provides a rough guide of tolerance grades suitable for various manufacturing processes.

Tolerance grades 01 to 16 inclusive, in the ranges up to 20 inches or 500 mm, agree with those specified in ISO Recommendation R286-1962, ISO System of Limits and Fits Part I: General, Tolerances, and Deviations, for the same grades.

The formulae from which tolerances have been calculated are given in Appendix B.
