This is the first edition of CSA C22.2 No. 284.1,
Photo-electric controls. It is one of a series of Standards issued by CSA Group under Part II of the
Canadian Electrical Code.
This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group.
Scope:
1.1
This Standard covers outdoor and wet location, light-sensitive, photo-electric control units of the plugin, locking type, rated 600 V, 60 Hz ac or less, that are intended for controlling electric luminaires of the magnetic ballast, electronic ballast, tungsten-filament type, or light-emitting-diode (LED) and their associated driver, and that are intended to be employed for area lighting and installed in accordance with CSA C22.1,
Canadian Electrical Code, Part I.

This Standard covers shorting and open-circuit devices of the locking configuration, used as substitutes, where necessary, for the light-sensitive control units.
1.3
Solid-state photo-electric control units including a combination device for either dimming or switching a lighting load in addition are also evaluated in accordance with CSA C22.2 No. 184.1.
1.4
The receptacles covered by this Standard are only those used as mating parts with the locking type photo-electric controls of configuration defined in this Standard.
1.5
In this Standard, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
