This standard specifies definitions and hygiene requirements for the formulation, manufacture, use and handling of lubricants which may come into incidental contact with products during manufacture and
processing as for example through heat transfer, load transmission, lubrication or corrosion protection of machinery. Lubricants coming into incidental product and packaging contact within the food, food processing, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, tobacco and animal feeding stuffs industries would be considered within the scope of this Standard.
This Standard does not apply to substances which are used as product additives and those which are used in direct product contact as defined in the EC Directive on food additives (see Annex A).
The Standard confines itself to hygiene requirements and not occupational Health and Safety matters. It is essential however that occupational Health and Safety matters associated with processes are considered along with the hygiene requirements such that options are selected that satisfy both needs. Included in this Standard are registration criteria that can be used to assess conformance with this Standard for lubricants with incidental product contact (see Annex B).
