This International Standard specifies a model for the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags for items appropriate for the needs of all types of library, including Academic, Public, Corporate, Special and School. Part 1 of this International Standard establishes an abstract data model for the use of RFID tags. This data model specifies general requirements and a set of data elements to meet the needs for: - The circulation of library items. - Acquisition of library items. - Inter-library loan processes. - Data requirements of publishers, printers and other suppliers of library items. The standard aims to ensure interoperability in relation to exchange of library items with RFID tags, to ensure the library liberty of choice when acquiring or renewing equipment or library items from different vendors and for vendors to ensure general usability of their RFID-solutions in all libraries. The standard also specifies optional mechanisms for item security by means of the RFID tag and describes possible migration strategies for libraries that have earlier invested in RFID. Data elements are defined without any technical details about frequencies or encoding mechanisms. There should be no need to modify this Part 1 when RFID technology develops further and other parts are added with new technological choices or when existing parts are updated for technological detail. The actual encoding is described in other Parts of this standard. Ongoing advice needs to be provided because of the evolving nature of RFID technology, and the opportunities to migrate between different types of legacy system and encoding rules of ISO 28560. Annex A provides details of the source of such advice.
