ISO 16063 comprises a series of documents dealing with methods for the calibration of vibration and shock transducers. This document specifies the instrumentation and procedure to be used for performing calibration of field vibration calibrators (FVCs). Here, the FVC is mainly used for in situ checks of vibration and shock transducers providing sine wave vibration at known frequency and magnitude under field conditions. The FVC acts as a calibrated vibration source for in situ checks of transducer sensitivity which is specified or requested for example in ISO 8041, or in ISO 8042. Operational frequency and acceleration amplitude of FVCs are usually 160 Hz or 159,2 Hz, and 3,16 m/s2, 9,81 m/s2, or 10 m/s2 respectively which widely accepted as reference conditions. There are also FVCs with selectable amplitudes and frequencies. FVCs, in comparison to stationary calibration systems, have limitations in shaker power and inertial mass. Therefore, they can be unsuitable for heavy test objects, high acceleration amplitude, and large displacements. Employing the calibration procedure described by this part of ISO 16063, the acceleration generated by an FVC shall be traceable, through chain of calibration, to a primary or national standard as defined by the VIM. It should be noted that FVCs, although some may be named as “handheld calibrator” or “portable calibrator” in a market, this part of ISO 16063 does not cover FVCs used for the calibration of transducers. Such FVCs shall satisfy ISO 16063-21. It should be also noted that a calibrated FVC in accordance with this part of ISO 16063 may not allow to be used for calibration of transducers. Procedures and requirements of in situ calibration by FVC are beyond the scope of this International Standard. Producers of FVC should provide instructions, information and limitations needed for the users of the FVC.
