This part of ISO 9241: • Describes the methods that can be used for the evaluation of haptic devices and of systems that include haptic devices. • Specifies a procedure for the evaluation of haptic interactions based on user testing (Annex I). • Provides a list of the attributes of haptic systems, cross-referenced to the relevant clauses of ISO 9241-910, ISO 9241-920 and ISO 9241-9601, that can be assessed using evaluation based on inspection and laboratory-based measurement. ISO 9241-940 includes interaction in a virtual environment – logical or virtual spaces with which a user can interact with the aid of a haptic device. EXAMPLE 1 A series of trucks carrying ore from a loading zone to an unloading zone is run at a supervisory level. The operator has access to video displays of the actual work site, but his primary control is through a graphic rendition of the overall truck positions along a path. The operator commands the truck motion with the help of graphic/haptic icons on the display. This is within the scope of ISO 9241-940. ISO 9241-940 does not apply to interactions with real environments that are not made through a computercontrolled synthetic display. Specifically, it excludes joint-by-joint control with direct visual display of the manipulated mechanism. EXAMPLE 2 A “hot cell” allows an operator to handle nuclear material while viewing the scene through a protective lead-glass window. The manipulator typically uses a mechanical linkage between the handle end that is manipulated by the operator, and the tong end that handles the dangerous material. This is not within the scope of ISO 9241-940.
