In recent years, concerns about the fate and effects of pulp and paper mill effluents on the environment have emerged, and countries throughout the world are focusing attention on the implementation of regulatory and monitoring programs. In response, the industry has begun to implement a variety of process and treatment technologies designed to minimize or eliminate the potential impacts.

The book and CD-ROM explores the most active and critical current research and experimentation from around the world. Completely edited, the papers present the latest developments in research and practical applications relating to pulp and paper wastewater treatment as well as associated issues such as air emissions and solid waste production. Primary themes are recent advances in treatment processes to minimize the discharge of nutrients, for recirculation of process waters, for control of effluent toxicity and for other advanced effluent criteria.

Fate and Effects is based on the 5th international conference held last year in Seattle titled "From Saltsjobaden to Seattle - 12 years of science, process, and policy change: What have we learned from effluent effects assessments and their validation at the population, community, and ecosystem level? " As such, the book and CD-ROM examines the identity and origin of chemicals in pulp mill effluents, environmental fate of chemicals from pulp and paper mills, bioaccumulation of substances from pulp mills to fish and wildlife, field and laboratory studies of biochemical and whole organism responses associated with pulp and paper effluents, integrated monitoring and future research, and policy directions of this rapidly evolving field. In addition, it addresses the marked difference in conclusions drawn in the Scandinavian countries, where effects were widely reported, and from North America, where effects had gone largely unreported.

Written by prominent scientists from around the world with contributions from industry, government, and academia, this important new book and CD-ROM provides a balanced global perspective of the recent scientific findings and the challenges being faced in the immediate future.

The book is 608 pages and includes a fully searchable CD - bound in the book. The CD-ROM contains the complete text and illustrations, with advanced search tools for convenient research.
