This document describes procedures for large scale and small scale testing, as well as related requirements which are preconditions in order to identify relations between large scale and small scale testing of brittle crack arrest steels. Possible solutions for relations that are suitable for approval are indicated.

To verify the brittle crack arrestability, either ESSO tests to determine crack arrest toughness, K_ca, or isothermal wide plate tests to determine crack arrest temperature, CAT, shall be carried out. Subject to approval, alternative test methods, i.e. small scale tests, may be applied for acceptance testing during production of BCA steels.
