The scope of the document is to describe the process for the type approval (TA) and type approval design certification (TADC) of ballast water management systems (BWMS).

In addition to confirming compliance with the requirements in the BWMS Code, a TA certificate in accordance with this CP will confirm compliance with the BWMS design requirements in DNV-RU-SHIP Pt.6 Ch.7 Sec.1 [3.3] and DNV-RU-SHIP Pt.6 Ch.7 Sec.1 [3.5].

In case additional requirements other than DNV-RU-SHIP Pt.6 Ch.7 Sec.1 are applicable (e.g. pressure vessel rules), this shall be specified in the application for TA.

For approval of cyber security and containerised systems for BWMS, see DNV-CP-0231 and DNV-CP-0553. This class programme does not cover the type approval certification according to USCG 46 CFR 162.060.

Guidance note:

The certification of BWMS according to USCG requirements may be carried out in parallel with the process described in this document.
