This service specification describes the processes that DNV will follow to validate attribute claims made by companies in relation to the production and delivery of low carbon hydrogen and ammonia. Validation statements provided by DNV may be used by hydrogen producers to document and demonstrate compliance with relevant national and international standards. These include standards, guidelines, and regulatory requirements for renewable and low carbon hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives.
The services described in this specification include advisory, verification, and validation services, and cover the following:
1) Hydrogen produced from the following pathways:
a) Conventional:
— coal gasification and natural gas reforming – with or without carbon capture and storage (CCS).
b) Electrolysis based:
— on grid electricity – with or without a power purchase agreement (PPA)
— on dedicated renewables
— on nuclear power.
c) Novel pathways:
— biomass and waste gasification
— biogenic gas reforming
— methane pyrolysis.
2) Ammonia production associated with the above-mentioned pathways for hydrogen production.
DNV services are based on a life cycle approach that encompasses the main elements related to hydrogen and ammonia production and transportation chains, as shown in Figure 1-1. App.A includes examples of relevant attribute claims that may be made for individual elements in the value chain, in addition to claims made for the full life cycle from feedstock production to end-use.
