The standard aims to provide guidance for establishing a competence foundation through an identified set of DP-related competencies and described level of awareness for key technical personnel, such as engineers, engine room watch keepers, electro technical staff and relevant shore-based staff involved in, or responsible for, related activities.

Due to the fact that there are many different systems it is important that the knowledge, understanding and skills as described in the standard can be applied to the actual system and procedures on board. Type specific competencies shall be developed through type specific competence development provided by the manufacturer or by a training centre, approved by the manufacturer.
