The standard provides technical requirements for the design and construction of a WAPS unit related to strength and fatigue assessments of a WAPS unit and its foundation on board. The following WAPS are explicitly covered by this standard:

— rotor sails

— wing sails

— ventilated foil systems.

Other systems than mentioned above may be covered by this standard, but the applicability shall be agreed with the Society on a case-by-case basis.

The standard provides procedural requirements to be followed upon certification and classification of a WAPS unit and for its installation on board a ship, see Sec.5.

The standard provides physical principles and associated safety considerations in App.A when a WAPS unit is installed on board of a newbuilding or on an existing vessel.

Informative guidance on aspects of WAPS installed on ships is given in App.B.

When WAPS are designed as a Bermudian rig or similar, provisions of DNV-ST-0412 may be applied, on a case-by-case basis, hence applying the load specifications according to Sec.3.
