These Rules apply specifically to all loading gear as defined in C.3 on seagoing ships and offshore installations. Where national regulations permit, and an appropriate agreement is concluded, they may also be applied, as and where relevant, to loading gear and loose gear on board inland navigation vessels or onshore. 

These Rules do not apply to:

– launching gear for lifesaving appliances – launching gear for diving equipment

– structural parts of ramps and car decks, see Section 6, C.2.2.1

– dredging appliances which are not loading gear

For existing lifting appliances, where GL has given approval to the technical documentation according to the "Guidelines for Lifting Appliances 1992", these "Rules for Loading Gear" apply only to new parts and repairs, as well as for tests and examinations
