These Guidelines define the test requirements for data networks to be performed in the context of a Type Approval.
The range of application of the data network with respect to number and type of integrated systems needs to be clearly defined by the client. The Type Approval certificate is valid only for this range of application as noted on the certificate.
Electronic devices of a data network as e.g. routers or switches are subject to Type Approval according to GL Guidelines Test Requirements for Electrical / Electronic Equipment and Systems (VI-7- 2).
Application
These Guidelines are to be applied to data networks installed onboard ships or offshore platforms which are integrating two or more application systems, of which one or more are related to Classification, e.g. navigation and automation systems (in the following: Complex Data Networks).
According to the complexity of the data network design the approval process follows an iterative approach. The process starts with an initial meeting in which the Requirement Class (for definition see B.6) is assigned to the data network, based on the number and kind of integrated application systems.
The extent of documents to be submitted and of testing required for Type Approval of Complex Data Networks is determined by GL on a case-by-case basis, depending on the size, application and respective Requirement Class.
On request of a client, Type Approval of data networks may also be performed even if not mandatory according to these Guidelines.
