Every discipline has its own special terminology and lighting is no exception. This Technical Memorandum identifies and discusses the five basic metrics that need to be learned. Unfortunately, they have similar names and unusual units and thus embody a challenge for the beginner. Presented here are numerous calculations, tables, and diagrams that clearly define luminous flux, illuminance, luminous intensity, luminance, and luminous exitance.
