PURPOSE AND SCOPE
These minimum operational performance specifications are designed to ensure that aircraft Mode S Specific Services Application systems certificated to them will be compatible with ICAO Annex 10 Volume III Part 1 Digital Data Communications Systems, and with the Manual on Mode S Specific Services, ICAO Document 9688. These minimum operational performance specifications do not include detailed descriptions of Mode S data coding formats, protocols and interfaces; these can be found in ICAO Annex 10, Volume IV and ICAO Document 9688.
This MOPS is written so that new Mode Specific Services Applications can be added into this document as they are defined and required, by adding new subsections in chapter 3 and chapter 5.
The specifications and testing of the Mode S transponder function and the Mode S data processing functions necessary to provide the Mode S service for the Mode S Specific Services applications covered by these minimum operational performance specifications are detailed in EUROCAE documents ED-73A and ED-82A respectively.
Chapter 1 of this document provides information necessary to understand the need for the system characteristics and tests defined in the remaining chapters. It describes typical system applications and operational objectives and is the basis for the performance criteria stated in Chapter 2 to Chapter 4. Definitions essential to proper understanding of this document are also provided in Chapter 1.
Chapter 2 contains general design specifications.
Chapter 3 contains the minimum performance specification for the system.
Chapter 4 specifies the environmental test conditions which provide a laboratory means of determining the overall performance characteristics of the system under conditions representative of those which may be encountered in actual operations.
Chapter 5 details recommended test procedures for demonstrating compliance with Chapters 3 and 4.
Chapter 6 specifies the performance demanded of the installed system. It also includes ground and flight tests of the installed system, which may be required when performance cannot be adequately determined through testing under standard test conditions.
