PURPOSE AND SCOPE
This document contains minimum operational performance specifications for Emergency Locator Transmitters, (ELT), developed to ensure that equipments certificated to them will be compatible with the relevant ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices, and the requirements of the COSPAS/SARSAT organisation for emergency locator transmitters operating in the 406 MHz band.
Throughout the development of this document, EUROCAE Working Group 29 gave particular attention to those aspects of design and implementation which affect reliability and protect against the possibility of inadvertent activation. To this end, the nature and sequence of the environmental tests and conditions contained in Chapter 4 are different from those normally required of aircraft equipment.
The word "equipment", as used in this document, includes all components and units necessary for the ELT to properly perform its intended functions; for example, the "equipment" may include a battery power supply, a transmitter, a crash sensor (with transmitter activation circuits), antenna, remote monitor and control unit, interconnecting cables, and mounting brackets and hardware. In this example, the "equipment" comprises all of the foregoing components and units. However, it should not be inferred from this example that every ELT design will necessarily include all of the foregoi11g iterrrs. l'lris will depend orr lire specific desig11 cl1ose11 by tire manufacturer.
