PURPOSE AND SCOPE
This document details the minimum operational performance requirements of a GCAS which is intended to be compliant with ICAO Annex 6 parts I and II. The approach proposes the use a terrain database to meet both basic and enhanced operational modes. At this time the document cannot be issues as a MOPS because:
• Some aspects of the warning and caution logic need to be confirmed by simulation and trials
• No equipment, which conforms to the document, has been put forward for certification
• A terrain database of suitable integrity has not been formally approved for use in GCAS applications
Not with standing the limitations identified above, the document is put forward with the following aims:
• To further the state of the art in approaches to the avoidance of Controlled Flight Into Terrain
• To encourage further work in the area of terrain based GCAS
• To provide a baseline requirement for the development of certified terrain databases
• To support the development of appropriate TSO's for future GCAS and GPWS equipments.
• To form the basis of a GCAS MOPS in the near future.
This minimum operational performance specification is designed to ensure that aircraft equipment certificated to it will be compatible with ICAO Annex 6, Parts I and II.
