This specification is applicable to laser lap welds on coated and uncoated carbon steels, stainless steels and high strength low alloy (HSLA) steels with a carbon content of < 0.25 % (steels according to GMW2 and GMW3032). Application of this specification is restricted to sheet metal combinations in which at least one of the pieces of sheet metal to be welded is less than or equal to 1.5 mm in thickness.

Note: Exceptions to this specifications such as e.g. sheet metal combinations which are not covered by this specification shall be agreed by the Product Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering Department and shall be indicated accordingly on the drawing. 

Zinc (ZZ), hot-dip galvanized (HDG), zinc-nickel (ZN) and their alloys are permissible as coating on one or both sides. A total coating thickness of 30 μm max. is permissible between the sheets to be welded.

Welds on components with organic or non-metallic coating are not covered by this specification.
