This standard applies to radial lip type oil seal, O-ring seal, and products for similar purpose.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this standard is to determine the corrosive characteristics of sealing compound when in contact with steel shafts. The test results are expressed in terms of a rating system, wherein a corroded test plate is compared to corrosion "standards" showing graduated degrees of corrosion. When a seal material has been accepted for an application, spot checking of incoming lots may be accomplished on the seal lip itself to determine continuing quality of the product. Ideally, the sealing material should have a zero rating in regard to its corrosive properties on steel. But, actually, corrosion-permitted ratings for each applied seals shall be specified.
