This specification covers the requirements for a thermoseting, solvent-borne blackout chip resistant primer that is applied by spraying and can be topcoated with acrylic enamel color coat and/or waterborne basecoat in combination with solvent borne clearcoat. This material is intended to provide a smooth, chip resistant coating over previously applied primers (such as dip, spray or cathodic E-coat). It is intended to protect lower body sheet metal surfaces that are subjected to severe gravel impact from coating failures to the substrate that would cause premature corrosion. The coating is part of the total painted product system and must meet requirements set forth in the specifications for other materials with which it is used.
