Material Description. This specification details the material and performance requirements of a preformed sealer, used with plastic gauge or drain hole "plug assemblies". The sealant compound, depending upon its formulation, slightly melts or expands, when processed through the Paint Shop Sealer/Primer Bake Oven. This bake, seals the plug assembly to the body, preventing water, dust, or air intrusion. The sealer must cure to a tack free surface. It must adhere to electrocoated metal. Expanding sealers are expected to meet either the High Bake (Type A) or Low Bake (Type B) requirements. Non-expanding sealers are expected to meet both the High Bake and Low Bake requirements (Type C). Material must show no sign of trapped air from either an external observation or a sectional view before and after curing.

Material Identification. Not applicable.

Symbols. Not applicable.

Applicability. These sealers, as part of the plug assemblies, are installed to the body manually, in the paint shop sealer line.

Remarks.

Technology Approval Documentation. At the conclusion of testing to this specification, the supplier must provide a document package (1.4.2 through 1.4.3).

Product Data. Documentation of all attributes and test results are required for the material, per Section 3 of this specification. All test panels should be identified and photographed for full documentation.

Bake Charts. A Bake window that identifies the Bake Conditions where the sealer meets, and no longer meets all requirements of this specification, must be provided. Key Product Characteristics to include, at minimum, Volumetric Expansion and Initial Adhesion. The Bake Chart is to reflect:

  • Time at metal temperature on x-axis, minimum range: (0 minutes to 90 minutes).
  • Temperature on y-axis, minimum range: (130 °C to 200 °C). Additional direction to be provided by the approving material engineer.

Additional information may be requested by the responsible GM Engineer, including manufacturing site and trend charting of these attributes for (x) number of the initial production material batches.
