This specification covers the qualification and performance for exterior, solvent borne, clearcoat systems for use over electroplated plastic.

Material Description. Clearcoat components of these systems are one component or two-component solvent borne. Electroplate of this system must meet the current performance requirements as specified in GM4372M. Clearcoat may be tinted to achieve an overall dark chrome look. Although primarily intended for use on electroplated plastic, this clearcoat may be used on electroplated metal. It may also be use on electroplated vehicle interior parts.

Qualification of this Material Specification. Each combination of specific clearcoat, pretreatment, and electroplate must be tested and approved as a clearcoat/electroplate system. The individual components are not interchangeable. In addition, clearcoat system is part of the total system and must meet qualifications set forth in this specification and those shown on engineering drawings.

Typical Application. Typical applications are grilles and exterior trim that require a dark chrome look.
