Material Description.

This specification covers the requirements for an alkali cleaner (powder or liquid) that will be used in the cleaning stages of spray, immersion and small parts phosphate systems. This process is engineered to provide a clean body-in-white or part by removing the contaminants including solder dust, flux, excessive mill oils, drawing compounds and prelubes, etc., normally on the body-in-white or part.

Applicability.

These materials may be applied either low or high pressure on a fully or partially assembled vehicle body-in-white or part to remove contaminants.

Remarks.

Since the condition of the metal surface is critical to the proper performance of the phosphate, the materials used under this specification must not adversely affect the formation of the proper phosphate coating. Therefore, these materials are considered part of the metal pretreatment process and shall be supplied by the phosphate supplier in each plant. Any exceptions to this rule must be first approved by the appropriate GM Materials Engineering Department (Product Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering).
