1 SCOPE.

This specification covers the basic physical, chemical, and performance requirements of purging solvents used with enamel coating materials, including high solids basecoat/clearcoat enamels. These materials shall efficiently clean all residual coating from the internal surfaces conventional and electrostatic application equipment during color changes and before shutdown of the equipment. The materials may be individual solvents or blends of classes solvents such as aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, and esters. This specification covers new (virgin) solvents, not reclaimed or reconstituted materials covered under specifications such as 9984037. Purge solvents must not be used for coating reduction. In addition they must not be used for cleaning the external parts of equipment or spray booths unless expressly approved in individual plant applications.
