This specification covers the qualification and performance requirements for exterior, onecomponent (1K) solventborne basecoat and twocomponent (2K), matte finish (low gloss), solventborne clearcoat topcoats that perform over bake latitude of 82 °C to 135 °C (180 °F to 275 °F). These topcoats are only used on nameplates, and emblems.
Material Description. Basecoat components of these systems are typically 2K (solvent) urethane or urethane blends. Clearcoat components of these systems are flexible, 2K (solvent) urethane or urethane blends. Each combination of specific basecoat and clearcoat must be tested and approved as a basecoat/clearcoat system. The individual components are not interchangeable and are approved for use only with combinations of basecoat/clearcoat of the total paint system which were used in qualification testing.
Symbols. Not applicable.
Typical Applications. These topcoats can be used on heat-sensitive plastics, flexible or rigid plastic parts. Additionally, these topcoats can be applied over resist coating (9984255).
Remarks. Submission requirements in 3.2 are for high gloss basecoat/clearcoat systems previously approved to GMW3005, and an existing 998XXXX specification. The only change is the addition of flatting agent to the clearcoat. For new basecoat/clearcoat systems, full approval to GMW3005 is required, and a new 998XXXX will be published.
