This specification covers the qualification and performance requirements for exterior rigid, one-component (1K), solventborne basecoat and one-component (1K), matte finish (low gloss), solventborne clearcoat topcoats that perform over bake latitude of 115 °C to 145 °C (240 °F to 290 °F). Typical volume solids as sprayed are 35% to 50% for basecoat and 45% to 60% solids for clearcoat. This topcoat system is intended to be used on rigid and semi-rigid substrates painted outside of the assembly plant.
Material Description. Basecoat components of these systems are typically one component (1K) solventborne technologies. Clearcoat components of these systems are flexible, one-component (1K) solventborne urethane or urethane blends. Each combination of specific basecoat and clearcoat must be tested and approved as a basecoat/clearcoat system. The individual components are not interchangeable and are approved for use only with combinations of basecoat/clearcoat of the total paint system which was used in the qualification testing. It must also be compatible with specific adhesion promoters and/or primers used with specific plastics.
Qualified to this Material Specification. Each combination of specific basecoat and clearcoat must be tested and approved as a basecoat/clearcoat topcoat system. The individual components are not interchangeable. This specification shall be used in conjunction with the GMW14797: Approved Paint on Plastic System (APOPS), a section of the GM Materials Approval Source List, which lists the approved substrate, cleaning, priming, and topcoat combinations. In addition, the topcoat system is part of the total coating system and must meet qualifications set forth in this specification and those shown on engineering drawings for appearance and durability.
Symbols. Not applicable.
Applicability. These topcoats are typically designed to be applied over an adhesion promoter or a bake primer. All Thermoplastic Polyolefin substrates using 9984529 must be applied over an adhesion promoter (9984808 or 9984810) or flame treatment per GMW16133. 1.4 Remarks. Not applicable
