GENERAL. The Metric Type AHS (High Stress) Self-piercing Nuts covered by this standard are intended for use in applications requiring permanently pre-installed internal multi-capabilities exceeding those provided by corresponding Type AH self-piercing nuts is necessary or where it is essential to obtain a flush mounting surface without employing an embossment. See the typical Type AHS Nut installations depicted.
As implied by name, these products are designed to be installed as a pierce nut wherein they produce their own hole in panels of the thickness specified in Table 1 and are staked into place in the same operation. The combined press functions minimize or eliminate entirely additional handling or secondary operations, such as welding, or the mounting of clip assemblies, thus reducing installation costs.
NOTE: Each of the respective types of self-piercing nuts require specific tooling to install them. Therefore, proper care must be exercised in the selection, procurement and distribution of nuts by part number to insure they are compatible with existing or contemplated installation equipment available at the assembly locations.
