This specification describes requirements for battery thermal insulators used to protect batteries from temperature sources that would prematurely shorten battery life.
MATERIALS. The thermal insulators are classified into 3 types: Type I - (Vinyl Nitrile closed cell expanded rubber); Type II (composite - Polyurethane Foam and Polypropylene Cover); and Type III (composite - Fiberglass and Polyester cover).
LIMITATIONS. The nature and proximity of heat sources and shield material/design features are key characteristics to consider when developing strategies for reducing heat gain by batteries. Consult with GM Materials Engineering for engineering standards for thermal insulators that may be used. The effectiveness of the insulation may be reduced by absorption of liquid or accumulation of debris. Parts much be vehicle tested under a variety of environmental conditions over time to measure the insulator's true effectiveness.
