This specification covers the requirements for a closed cell foam-in-place thermoplastic material to be used as a seal against air, dust, and water.
The material may also be used for certain applications as a silencer or flexible material for covering gaps, openings and other non-sealing type applications. Parts that are intended to function other than as undisturbed gaskets must function under the appropriate environments.
The material must not stain, attack, or have any other objectionable effect on adjacent surfaces.
This material is foamed through the introduction of an inert gas, such as nitrogen or carbon dioxide to a specific density reduction. The material is allowed to cool with the gas bubbles intact and a closed cell foam product is formed. Density reduction denotes the percentage of inert gas content.
For Heating, Ventilation, and Air-conditioning (HVAC) applications, this specification should be used in conjunction with the Chemical Specification that pertains to the subject material (CS6940-57).
Materials covered by this specification shall be classified as follows:
Type I—Thermoplastic Rubber Based Material
Type II—Thermoplastic Urethane Based Material
Material shall be given a grade designation based on the material surface characteristics after application. Grade A, Tacky; Grade B, Non-tacky.
Example of Drawing Callout.
Material: 9985724, Type I.
Performance: GM3628M, Type I, Grade B. Serviceability required. Compression Load Deflection = 30 kPa + 10%
