This specification covers the material and performance requirements for a permanent laser markable label used to display the vehicle identification number (VIN), a government requirement. The label will be affixed with a pressure sensitive adhesive and will have the following construction features:
A The label will be marked in-plant by laser ablation with the vehicle identification number, both human readable and a bar code. The bar code must be scannable for the life of the vehicle.
B The label must show a definite tamperproof or self destruct pattern when removed from the applicable substrate. The label shall not be transferable from one vehicle to another.
C The first surface of the label must have an anticounterfeit feature such as a watermark, scrambled corporation identification, or other feature.
The label is located on top of the instrument panel, permanently affixed to the vehicle structure. The labels should be easily removable from the release paper to facilitate ease of handling in the assembly plant. Label material and adhesive system must be compatible with and show good performance on all applicable substrates and production paint systems. Color schemes, lettering design, and dimensions will be separately called out on the part drawing.
Limitations.
The label is intended for usage under glass, and not exposed to direct weathering.
