1 SCOPE.
This specification covers sintered metal powder materials the primary constituents of which are iron and carbon. Four types of densities are provided for as many as three classes of carbon ranges. Type I, in addition to structural parts, is particularly suitable for oil impregnated porous bearings which operate at low speed and under somewhat higher stress (see Table of permissible stress under Selection and Use of Sintered Metal Powder which immediately precedes these specifications). Type I, Type II, Type III and Type IV provide higher density ranges and correspondingly higher strengths for other structural applications. Porosity and radial crushing characteristics are especially controlled for bearing applications and tensile characteristics for structural uses.
