This recommended practice covers apparatus and procedure for preliminary qualification and quality control testing of radial lip type oil seals for rotating shafts. It involves the use of seals under simulated service conditions; and observations of the amount of fluid leakage, and the conditions of seal and shaft before and after testing.

As standard test conditions do not always correlate with conditions encountered in use, it is anticipated that some details of the apparatus and/or procedure described herein will be changed to meet the needs of specific applications.
