This specification describes the requirements for expanded cellular materials to be used as a seal against air, dust and/or water. The material may also be used for certain applications as a silencer or a flexible material for covering gaps, openings and other non-sealing type applications.
Open cell materials should be specified using the appropriate ASTM, SAE or ISO methods. They are not covered under this specification.
Certain applications may require the use of an adhesive. If an adhesive is required, an ADH suffix shall be added after the basic specification and type number.
Certain Interior parts will require a low friction coating to reduce friction or grab between the seal and the subsume. When this coating is required, a CO suffix shall be added after the specification and type number.
Note to Users: To properly use GM6086M, the following information must be added to the engineering drawing.
Specify material, e.g Nitrile, EPDM, etc.
Specify density with tolerance.
Indicate the ADH or CO suffix if an adhesive or low friction coating shall be used.
Identify application, such as interior, exterior or underhand. There are specific tests required for each use.
Specify if material is to perform as a water seal.
Specify surface appearance of dimensions using current RMA requirements (see NOTE). Consult with Materials Engineering for assistance.
