This standard defines basic requirements for two "chemical grades" of steel offal or scrap as produced in turning and drilling operations on wrought steel components, intended for use in foundry iron charges. Supplied loose, such material is commonly referred to as "Steel Machine Shop Turnings," or "Steel Turnings." Supplied after crushing, such material is commonly referred to as "Short Shovel Turnings" or "Short Shovelings." Supplied after compacting, such material is commonly referred to as "Steel Briquettes."
Purchaser specifies "Carbon" or "Alloy," and "Loose," "Crushed," "Briquetted" by use of suffix symbol as follows:
