This specification covers the material requirements for an under hood or protected exterior label that is designated for a permanent application. Most of these labels serve as information/caution type function. Tamperproof features incorporated into computer generated labels inhibit the labels from being transferred from one vehicle to another.
Material Description. This specification identifies labels for underhood and/or protected exterior. Those labels are designated as Type IA, Type IB, Type IC, Type ID, Type IE, Type IF, Type II, Type IIIA, Type IIIB and Type IV.
Types IA, IB, and IC labels are to be used in areas away from the battery where contact with acidic vapors are negligible.
Types IA, IB and IC labels are composed of a single ply polyester film with a thickness of 0.03 to 0.06 mm.
Types IA, IB and IC labels shall be second surface printed, (reverse printed).
Type IA labels (emission certification labels) cannot be repositioned in plant applications due to their tamperproof construction.
Type IB labels are used for information/caution type applications.
Type IC labels are to be used for protected exterior applications.
Types IA, IB and IC labels shall meet the requirements of GMLS-001-6 or 8/8A.
Type ID labels shall have a surface and subsurface destruct varnish that shows evidence of tampering upon base label or the clear overlay.
Type ID labels are to be used in areas away from the battery where contact with acidic vapors are negligible.
Type ID labels are composed of a polyester film with a matte coating for computer generated text and designed for a specific printer. The polyester film shall be 0.04 to 0.06 mm. There shall be a single ply polyester clear overlay with a thickness of 0.04 to 0.06 mm.
Type IE labels were formerly GM6279M, "Labels, Underhood Export Vehicles".
Type IE labels are to be used in areas away from the battery where contact with acidic vapors are negligible.
Type IE labels are composed of a polyester film with a matte coating, containing a fluorescent dye, for computer generated text and designed for a specific printer. The polyester film shall be 0.04 to 0.06 mm. There shall be a single ply polyester clear overlay with a thickness of 0.04 to 0.06 mm.
Type IE labels shall have tamper slits which result in label destruction if removal is attempted. The adhesive shall contain a florescent dye, which activates under UV light and will leave visible footprint upon removal.
Type IF labels were formerly GM6239M, "Label - Pressure Sensitive, Printable, Without Overlay"
Type IF labels are computer generated labels for protected exterior use.
These IF type labels consists of a polyester film with a thickness of 0.04 to 0.06 mm with a matte coating for computer generated text and designed for a specific printer.
Type II.
Type II Labels shall have the required performance/construction to meet the durability on and around the battery.
Type II labels shall be constructed of a single ply vinyl film with a thickness of 0.10 mm overlayed with a 0.05 mm polypropylene laminate.
Type III labels were formerly GM195M, "Emblem/Label, Heat Transfer, (Protected) Exterior, Underhood".
Heat transfer labels applied to various plastics for protected exterior and underhood applications. Type III labels shall meet the color requirements of GMLS-001-20.
Both Types IIIA and Type IIIB labels have a typical construction of a clearcoat, one or more screened ink layers, and a heat activated adhesive. The total label thickness will be 0.25 to 0.75 mm.
These type labels are applied to a carrier/release film and subsequently transferred to the appropriate substrate by a heat transfer process.
Type IIIA labels are for protected exterior applications such as spare tire covers.
Type IIIB Labels are for underhood applications applied on plastic substrates. The labels may be caution, notice or information type labels.
Type IV Labels.
Type IV labels are used for painted and unpainted metals and painted and unpainted plastics.
Type IV labels are composed of polyester films thicker than 0.1 mm and thickness shall be called out on the individual engineering drawing.
Type IV labels are second surface printed.
Type IV labels shall contain a single ply matte polyester laminate.
