This specification covers the material requirements for labels used on secondary surfaces such as in the trunk, on jacks, foundation board liners, etc, and other areas not directly exposed to direct weathering. The labels may be permanently affixed to the surface or attached with a tether. These labels are not intended to be used underhood.
Material Description. There are seven types of labels qualified to this spec, Types I thru VII.
Type I. Typically used on smooth flat surfaces such as foundation board, TPO, etc.
Label is a white coated high gloss paper face stock material with a weight of 89 ± 8 g/m². This type label shall meet the requirements of GMLS-001-1.
The adhesive shall be a permanent acrylic pressure sensitive type with a thickness of 0.025 mm min.
These type labels shall meet the color requirements of GMLS-001-01.
Type II. Typically used on non-metallic, unsmooth fibrous type materials like insulation padding.
Label is a coated high gloss paper stock material with a weight of 89 ± 8 g/m². This type label shall meet the requirements of GMLS-001-1.
This label contains either a pressure sensitive adhesive with a minimum thickness of .05 mm or a hot melt adhesive bead applied to the entire perimeter of the label with a bead size typically of 0.125 mm that will enable wet out on the mating surface.
Type III. Typically was used on painted steel, SMC, and RIM body panels. This label type is to no longer be used. (Refer to Type IV).
Label was a single ply polyester film with a thickness of 0.03 to 0.06 mm. This type label shall meet the requirements of GMLS-001-8a.
Adhesive was a permanent acrylic pressure sensitive type with a thickness of 0.025 mm minimum.
Type IV. Typically used on painted steel, SMC, and RIM body panels.
Label is a single ply polyester film with a thickness of 0.03 to 0.06 mm.
Adhesive on this type label shall be a permanent acrylic pressure sensitive type with a thickness of 0.025 mm minimum.
All printing will be done on the reverse side of the film for added abrasion resistance.
These type labels shall meet the color requirements of GMLS-001-06, 8/8A.
Type V. Typically used on painted steel, SMC, and RIM body panels.
This white biaxially oriented polypropylene film may contain either a clear or matte finish overlay, or a varnish overcoat for low abrasion areas. This type label shall meet the requirements of GMLS-001-23, 24 or 25.
Adhesive shall be an acrylic pressure sensitive type with a thickness of 0.025 mm minimum.
Type VI. There are two versions under Type VI. Type VIA are used on major body panels, SMC and RIM. Type VIB are typically used as door lock indicator labels. These type labels shall meet the color requirements of GMLS-001-2.
Type VIA. Labels that are a single ply vinyl films with a thickness of 0.03 to 0.065 mm.
Type VIB. Labels that are single ply vinyl films with a minimum thickness of 0.10 mm, screen-printed with fluorescent ink (WMH-5096 fire orange) and clear coated with an acrylic or urethane clear coat.
Adhesive for both types VIA and VIB shall be an acrylic pressure sensitive type with a thickness of 0.025 mm minimum.
Type VII. (Formerly GM187M.) This label will typically refer to jack usage instructions and may or may not be attached with a tether. If a tether is used it must meet a pull strength of 10.0 lbs. This type is composed of two different constructions.
Type VIIA. Labels consisting of a 0.168 mm thick polyester/polypropylene/clear polyester trilaminate. Type VIIA labels shall meet the requirements of GMLS-001-19.
Type VIIB. Labels consisting of a 0.168 mm thick polyester/polypropylene/clear polypropylene trilaminate. Type VIIB labels shall meet the requirements of GMLS-001-23 or 24.
Type VIII. Information type labels. There shall be Type VIIIA, Type VIIIB and Type VIIIC labels.
Type VIIIA and Type VIIIB. Labels that may consist of a bi or trilaminate construction. A base white polypropylene with a clear or matte polypropylene laminate, and will meet the requirements of GMLS-001-23 or 24.
Type VIIIA. Labels containing a type of tag utilizing, an adhesive for attachment, an elastic string or tether for attachment.
Type VIIIB. Labels containing no adhesive or other type of attachment.
Type VIIIC. Labels for temporary applications and are constructed of a single ply polypropylene. Type VIIIC labels are surface printed and can be attached by an adhesive, tether or an elastic string.
Type IX. Information labels, which are, stitched to the fabric materials, such as jack bags or other fabric type products.
Type IX. Labels consisting of a polyethylene cross laminate with a varnish overcoat. Label shall be at least 6.5 mils thick to withstand stitching, normal manufacturing and customer usage.
Type X. Information labels for temporary usage only. These labels are made of a minimum of 60# label paper stock and may contain a coating on one or both sides.
Type XA. Labels containing a type of tag utilizing an adhesive, an elastic string or tether for attachment.
Type XB. Labels containing no adhesive or other type of attachment.
