1. Scope
1.1 Material Description. This specification encompasses pretreatment and powder paint systems to be applied to nonferrous engine covers in order to meet functional, cosmetic and durability requirements. It allows for the approval and subsequent use of various powder coating materials and pretreatment systems meeting the performance requirements stated herein. Materials supplied to the specification are intended to perform at variable engine service temperatures and be resistant to prolonged service intervals at elevated, underhood temperatures. The materials must also be resistant to common engine fluids. Such coating systems might consist of a spray or immersion applied pretreatment or conversion coating followed by a powder topcoat. Material systems approved to this specification will identify specific powder topcoat material and thickness requirement, the type of pretreatment system to be utilized, and the type of substrate material to be coated.
