This procedure describes the techniques used to observe the surfaces of parts and molds used in the production of automotive body panels. Surface smoothness is very difficult to see, under normal lighting conditions, in unchromed tools, as molded, or low gloss painted parts. By observing the surfaces of the tools parts (painted or unpainted) using columnized reflected lighting, defects in surface smoothness, paint, and continuity can be readily detected.
