This specification replaces the specification GM4349M. This specification covers the interior durability requirements and chemical resistance for paint finishes applied to plastic substrates and is applicable to flexible or rigid substrates or integral skin foam systems. In special cases a reverse impact requirement shall be designated by the addition of an RI suffix to the specification code, i.e. GMN10083 (R180) specifies 80% retention of total energy in reverse impact.

The extended durability testing in this specification is required for corporate approval of all new interior paint products. Once corporate approval is given of a new paint system, routine testing of the paint as it is used on parts shall be covered by GM4350M.

Paint systems which have been approved on plastics require validation on parts to be fully approved and included in the Approved Paint on Plastic Systems (GM APOPS) data base.

As of June 2003 all interior paint system approvals must meet the requirements of GMN10033 "Sunscreen Lotion Resistance of Interior Coatings". No other tests should be conducted until the paint finish passes the cure test per 3.3, and the sunscreen lotion test per 3.8.2.

Note: If parts are fabricated from prepainted material, the paint film shall be capable of withstanding all the necessary fabrication processes, including forming temperatures, in addition to specified requirements as detailed below without any detrimental appearance or performance changes.
