This specification describes the requirements of expanded closed-cell materials to be used as a seal against air and or dust only. These materials may also be used for silencing squeak and rattles, covering gaps and other non-sealing applications. (For sealing against water use GM6086M).
Material Identification. Materials shall be identified according to ranges of compression deflection, per section 3.2, as listed below:
• Type IAA < 5.00 kPa
• Type IA 5.00 to 21.00 kPa
• Type IB 21.01 to 48.00 kPa
• Type II 48.01 to 97.00 kPa
• Type IIIA 97.01 to 172.00 kPa
• Type IIIB 172.01 to 276.00 kPa
Certain applications may require the use of an adhesive. If an adhesive is required, an ADH suffix shall be added after the basic specification and type number.
Other interior parts will require a low friction coating to reduce friction between the seal and the substrate. When this coating is required a CO suffix shall be added after the specification.
Remarks
To properly use GMN11106 the following information must be added to the engineering drawing
Specify material, e.g. Nitrile, EPDM, etc.
Specify density and tolerance.
Indicate the ADH or CO suffix if an adhesive or low friction coating shall be used.
Identify application, such as interior, exterior or underhood. There are specific tests required for each use.
Specify surface appearance and dimensions using current RMA requirements (see Note below), as agreed upon between engineering and the supplier.
Note: RMA Handbook for Molded, Extruded, Lathe Cut & Cellular Products.
