Purpose/Material Description.
This specification covers the requirements for materials used as energy absorbing countermeasures. These materials are metals, honeycomb or wire forms, plastic shapes, and foams.
Types of Energy Absorbing Countermeasures.
Type I - Metal Countermeasures.
Type IA - Tubes. Hollow wound metal foil wrapped with resonated craft paper or other fibrous material.
Type IB - Brackets. Stamped metal.
Type II - Plastic Countermeasures.
Type IIA - Honeycomb form.
Type IIB - Thermal-formed shapes.
Type IIC - Injection-molded parts.
Type III - Foam Countermeasures.
Type IIIA - Polypropylenes.
Type IIIB - Polyethers.
Type IIIC - Polyurethanes.
Type IIID - Extruded/Expanded Polyolefins.
Type IIIE - Polystyrenes.

Applicability.
These materials are used in headliners, pillars, knee bolsters, door panels, and any other interior area of the vehicle where FMVSS 201, FMVSS 208, and FMVSS 214 criteria need to be met.
Remarks.
This specification shall encompass all head and body side impact energy absorbing countermeasures for interiors, including knee bolsters.
